I kept falling asleep during the debates the other night. Caught enough to agree with most that the debate was mostly a draw, though I subtract from McCain for acting like a churlish asshole. Also, what a creepy fuck he is when he laughs at things *shudder*. Oh, and I was embarrassed for both of them when neither really answered Lehrer's question about what they would cut from the federal budget keeping the kabillion dollar bailout in the works.

We had nice plans for the weekend that all sort of went bust. But that's ok, it's more important for [personal profile] fings to recuperate from his cold.

I'm SO GLAD it's starting to cool down. Perversely, this makes me think of planning a vacation in the coming months. We're kicking around the idea of going to Puerto Rico in November. If we do, I'll be back on the island for the first time in half a lifetime, to the month (last I was there was 11/91 when we visited because my father's brother and only sibling was dying. sad visit, very sad.) [personal profile] fings has never been except for a stopover years ago either on his way to or from Anguilla. It's a lovely island, and it will be nice to marinate in it's beauty and Puerto Rican-ness :). My oldest nephews both got to visit this summer for the first time in their lives, separate trips with their respective girlfriends. They really loved it and look forward to going back. It's a nice thought, that one day we can bring kid(s) of ours there and show them where their grandparents came from, where one side of their ancestors lived for generations. Of course the same could be said for the area where [personal profile] fings' folks live, his father's side of the family have been in that neck of Jersey woods for a long time. I guess it's being the child of immigrants, there's a great appeal to showing "this is where you come from". As a first generation American, you have each foot planted in a different culture, feeling neither entirely of here nor there. I remember in high school and the early years of college, the nervousness I'd feel when I would visit the home of a white friend. I felt like there were arcane "white people" rules that I did not know (and couldn't understand, no matter how much tv I watched) and would make an ass of myself. I never felt like that visiting the homes of other friends whose families were from other places. It was like, well yeah, shit goes down the way it goes down in an Indian home, Mexican home, a Haitian home, an Egyptian home, whatever. We were united in our Otherness, of not truly being part of mainstream America; a wacky land where only one language was spoken at home, and people ate weird shit like tuna casseroles and meatloaf :P.

My insomnia seems to have finally reversed itself (hopefully). Two night in a row of sleeping decently and waking up before 7am. I took a long nap yesterday afternoon and yet I was still able to sleep last night. Awesome. Hopefully I can actually accomplish some things today.
