After being up for most of the night despite myself, I crashed at 7am in the recliner and woke up around 1pm. I stretched when I woke up, and got a charley horse in my left calf. It hurt like a FUCKING GODDAMNED MOTHERFUCKER, ZOMG. Thank goodness [personal profile] fings was home, he was able to rub my calf for me as I whimpered and cursed in pain. I wish like hell there was a less painful way for my body to let me know I am low on calcium. I drank some calcium enriched orange juice and took some Viactiv calcium chews once I was able to walk, and made sure to drink plenty of milk today. I'm glad I can stomach the chews again, for a long while there, they were making me gag.

My sister has ongoing calcium deficiency and needs to take thousands of milligrams of calcium every day or she will die. If she misses a dose or has a bit of chocolate or caffeine (which interfere with calcium absorbtion) her hands, feet, and mouth start to cramp like that. If she does not take calcium at the first sign, her hands will cramp so she isn't able to use them. If she continues to not take calcium her arms will cramp into her chest and her legs will cramp into her body, and her heart will stop.

Dude, she always has calcium on hand. It's creepy.

Cramps can also be caused by dehydration or low potassium. Whenever I get a really bad one like that I immediately seek out water and bananas.

Wow, that's CRAZY! What's causing that? Do they know? Man. Kinda makes me feel bad for whining about my calf.

Some years back I had an ongoing spate of cramps in my calves. When I went online to get some ideas and found out about the cramp-calcium deficiency connection, I thought about it and realized that I had sucked for quite sometime getting enough calcium. As soon as I upped my intake, they went away. I've gotten calve cramps once in a blue moon since then, and it's always gotten better after more calcium. I had a feeling I'd get this at least once during the pregnancy, as this Kiddo is looting from my body left and right, and I was doing my best to get my calcium without supplements, cause the supplements were making me nauseous and gaggy. Well, that's past now, and I can take my Viactiv again!

Her parathyroid glands were malfunctioning and she had treatment on them, which killed them (unfortunately). Parathyroid controls calcium, therefore hers is out of whack. Some of my other siblings had the same thing done but they weren't impacted the same way.

She says it doesn't hurt, though. So maybe you're worse off with your calf, eh?

Eh, pain for several minutes and an achey calf for the rest of the day don't compare with that sort of ongoing situation. Your sister got the fuzzy end of lollipop, for sure. Damn.

Bananas helped me a lot when I had cramps during my pregnancies. I think calcium needs are covered in the prenatal vitamin.

I can't abide eating bananas! Blech! So far, the extra calcium seems to be working. Left calf is still sore from the charley horse, but no repeats.
